It determines comfort, durability, cost, and — crucially for compressed sofas — how well the product recovers after vacuum packing. This guide covers everything a procurement professional needs to know.
Foam density is measured in kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³). It indicates how much foam material is packed into a given volume. Higher density means more material, greater durability, and better compression recovery — but also higher cost.
ILD measures how firm a foam feels. It is separate from density. A 40 kg/m³ foam can be soft (low ILD) or firm (high ILD) depending on formulation.
For compressed sofas, we recommend: 35–45 kg/m³ density with 30–40 ILD. This combination delivers the best balance of compression recovery, comfort, and longevity.
