Foam Density Guide for B2B Furniture Buyers

For B2B furniture buyers, foam density is the single most important specification you will evaluate. It determines comfort, durability, cost, and — crucially for compressed sofas — how well the product recovers after vacuum packing. This guide covers everything a procurement professional needs to know.

What Is Foam Density?

Foam density is measured in kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³). It indicates how much foam material is packed into a given volume. Higher density means more material, greater durability, and better compression recovery — but also higher cost.

  • Low density (15–25 kg/m³): Soft, affordable, but sags quickly. Not suitable for commercial or compressed applications.
  • Medium density (25–35 kg/m³): Standard residential grade. Acceptable for occasional-use compressed sofas.
  • High density (35–50 kg/m³): Commercial grade. Ideal for hotel, rental, and high-turnover applications. Excellent compression recovery.
  • Ultra-high (50+ kg/m³): Used in specialty applications (e.g., medical seating). Overkill for most sofa applications and makes compression recovery slower.

ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) — The Other Key Metric

ILD measures how firm a foam feels. It is separate from density. A 40 kg/m³ foam can be soft (low ILD) or firm (high ILD) depending on formulation.

  • Low ILD (<25): Plush, sink-in feel. Good for decorative cushions.
  • Medium ILD (25–40): Balanced comfort and support. Standard for seating.
  • High ILD (40–60): Firm support. Ideal for lumbar support and commercial seating.

When a sofa is vacuum compressed, the foam is held at a fraction of its normal volume — sometimes for weeks or months during shipping. Upon opening, the foam must expand to its original shape. Low-density foam may:
